Picking Up Old Men (and some young ones too!)

Cream Puff
My “New” 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Recently my husband and I had a major car do-over. After much discussion, I was the one who had to buy the sensible family car (AKA the grocery getter). Alrighty then…

There was only one SUV that interested me, and it was really, really swanky but frankly for the price I wasn’t “that” interested. Plus, while driving it I felt like I was going to be a bird magnet, not the kind of bird that flies but the kind that flips.

My search continued.

I thought if I am going to have to drive a “Mom” car, it’s going to be the quintessential Momc car of all time. I went woody hunting.

I finally found one in Texas, a white woody, 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Her name is Cream Puff (that was part of her sales description on the website and it stuck). When I showed her picture to my kids on the computer screen, I received a resounding, “NO!”(with one of my lovely children even hitting her forehead on the table as an auditory explanation point.) Whatever…

She’s been fully restored by my new friend, Leon Miller. The type of Texan good ol’ boy that you want to do business with, honest to the core. She’s had a few updates, some utilitarian ones like rear seat belts and front seat fanny warmers, and some sexy ones like XM radio, an iPod connecter and a sunroof.

I’ve had her for a month and she’s a dream to drive. My kids quickly fell in love with her, as I knew they would especially when their friends all think she’s cool, my son can plug in his iPhone and blare Eminem and I’ve gotten a “so comfortable, Mrs. Drake!” more than one time.

I’ve been getting lots of waves, smiles, OKs and thumbs-up. Not one bird!

Little did I know that I would be getting A LOT of attention from old dudes and hoodie-wearing skater boys. Both ends of the adult male spectrum seem to REALLY like my car.

Getting groceries has become a whole lot more interesting.
