Guilty as Charged- Harboring Dead Hydrangeas

Yes, it’s true! I’m guilty of harboring one very dead and overly dried hydrangea arrangement for a whole year too long on top of my daughter’s armoire. A GROSS infraction on the Heaven on Earth-Home code of good housekeeping. No alibi, I simply missed the harvest last fall.

Dried floral arrangements that are colorless, full of dust and cobwebs need a one-way ticket to the compost pile. They should be checked a few times a year to make sure they’re still, well, pretty. No arrangement is better than one that is past its prime.
It took just 20 minutes from start to finish to create this arrangement (see above), the other day. Not a bad investment of time when it will give back a year’s worth of Ta-Dah!

When hydrangeas look washed out and yellow they are done, dead, kaput!
Toss or compost immediately!!

Annabelle hydrangeas that were cut this fall, just as they turned from white to green, hanging upside down to dry.

Materials:
Dried Hydrangeas- 4-6 Weeks dry time
-Always gather more than you think you’ll need…just in case!
Oasis Florists Foam
Container (pottery, basket or other cool vessel)
Pink Florist Spray Paint

Secure oasis in container. Arrange hydrangeas. Dust lightly with spray paint. Place in perfect spot. Clean up the inevitable dried flower mess. Enjoy!
Repeat annually. (Important Step!)

*Use left over dried hydrangeas in fresh floral arrangements throughout the winter. They will last for at least a month or more while the fresh flowers are changed out weekly.

*Old dried hydrangea mop heads are great for starting bonfires. Get it? They are extremely flammable. Another good reason to remove them from the home.
