Richard Gere & Carey Lowell Plant-it-Forward From Their New Inn, The Bedford Post

We felt like taking our shoes off at the bottom of the stairs when we (my sister, Janet and I) first arrived at the Bedford Post Inn. The comfortable atmosphere made us feel like we were welcomed guests to a beautiful home and as such you usually take your shoes off, right? The Bedford Post owned by Richard Gere, his wife Carey Lowell and Russell Heranadez is an inn, fine dining restaurant, The Farmhouse and cafe, The Barn.
When Martha Stewart agreed to donate plants to The Giving Gardens, I knew I was headed to Bedford, New York to pick them up. The Bedford Post Inn opened just last year and it happens to be about two miles from Martha’s home. In terms of location it was a perfect place to stay. When I began to research the inn and restaurants, I started to get excited about everything they had to offer. When I arrived, I fell in love.

Bedford, New York is gorgeous! You would never know that Manhattan was 45 minutes away. The staff, was very friendly and accommodating. The eight rooms have the finest design details like; Frette linens, towels and robes; Carrara marble bathrooms; Waterworks plumbing fixtures; vintage claw-foot bathtub and luxurious fabrics. However, Carey, whom I’m told is the head designer and lead visionary of the entire project, pulled it all together in a way that is extremely approachable and homey. Add into the mix the beautiful yoga studio, serene running routes and a nationally recognized chef, Brian Lewis, who whipped up plants for me in amazing ways, and I’m a very happy traveler!

It gets better…over the few days of our stay the staff keeps talking about how kind and generous Gere’s are and that they love the idea of The Giving Gardens. They were happy to donate plants to the cause. I worked with their gardener, Connie Ibrahim, to excavate some gorgeous woodland plants (ferns, jack in the pulpit, and sedge) and a few of her favorites (heuchera, hellebore, campanula and sedum). She was very nice and loved the The Giving Gardens idea as well. And, yes…I did have the chance to say “Hello” to Mr. Gere too.

The whole experience was truly Heaven on Earth.
